InnoHPC - HPC in focus – High performance computing application in industry and research

07-06-2018

Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) in close collaboration with the Governmental Information-Technology Development Agency (GITDA) has organised a regional HPC workshop in Budapest, 28 May 2018.

The goal of the event was to promote the popularity and practical application of high performance computing through presentations on university-industry collaborations in Hungary, and to create an opportunity for mapping and discussing HPC cooperation possibilities within the framework of the afternoon workshop.

The welcome speeches, held by the Deputy Secretary-General of BCCI and by the Vice-Chairman of GITDA, have emphasised the importance of HPC application in order to boost regional competitiveness and to establish knowledge-based economies within the Danube region.

The representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises and higher education and research institutions have participated in the one-day event. Besides the InnoHPC project, the results of Vi-SEEM project (as GITDA is a consortium member) have been presented, drawing attention to the importance of transnational cooperation.

The event has provided the opportunity not only to show research and projects results achieved by using HPC technology, but also to introduce different scientific disciplines (i.e. chemistry, astrophysics, medicine, climate and space research), where modelling and simulation tasks performed without HPC would become extremely costly and time-consuming.

During the afternoon workshop, HPC cooperation possibilities and alternatives of a wider HPC application in the field of research, higher education and industry have been overviewed. The discussion has been built on the five digital transformation guidelines identified by the InnoHPC project consortium; from accelerating awareness on the digital transformation to harmonizing regulation for digitalization.

All in all, the event aimed to raise awareness on HPC and its industrial application and tried to deepen the discussion on HPC between the different stakeholders in a hope of a better cooperation.
