02-11-2018
The 5th Regional Workshop, held on 24 September 2018 in Ostrava, organized by IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center and the Technical University of Kosice, contributed to spreading of awareness of HPC potential benefits among SMEs.
Within the workshop altogether 17 representatives of SMEs from different sectors and also business support organizations were acquainted with state-of-the-art trends in HPC and the capabilities of high performance computing centres in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia which can support SMEs with innovative development.
Workshop participants were presented with information about the InnoHPC project, whose aim is to increase innovation efficiency in the Danube region, and the opportunity to engage in pilot testing of the InnoHPC Lab platform within the ongoing open call. Emphasis was also put on practical example solutions for SMEs. Specific collaborative success stories of SMEs adopting HPC into their businesses were introduced by Tomas Karasek from IT4Innovations, and by the invited guest Filip Holka from the Computing Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. And last but not least, Martin Dujcak from the Technical University of Kosice, representing the CrowdStream project (Interreg Danube), presented cooperation models and possibilities of financing hi-tech innovations with a special focus on „alternative“ crowdfunding methods, which - as evidenced by the market - offer great potential not only for raising money, but also for disseminating product information and generating feedback from the general public before launching the product.
The overall outcome of the workshop can be summed up as follows:
The workshop contributed to raising the awareness among SMEs and business support organizations about the availability of HPC usage, the benefits of implementing HPC to speed up innovations, and promoted possible financing options for SMEs to cooperate with HPC centres.
The final discussions between the participants of the workshop confirmed that it is particularly important and desirable for enterprises to extend cooperation possibilities through ongoing promotion and enlightment of HPC benefits and supercomputing expertise. Within such outreach activities it is very important to include advices on financial means for enterprises to reach HPC.
