Sava River Day
The Sava River Day is celebrated on 1 June in four countries of the Sava River Basin - Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The aim of this celebration is to promote the exceptional ecological values and economic potentials in the Sava River Basin, sustainable use and development of economic activities, and the importance of good regional cooperation that contributes to a better status of water and water ecosystems and thus the higher quality of life of the population in the Sava River Basin.
The Sava River is a tributary of the Danube River, which originates in northwestern Slovenia. It is formed by the rivers Sava Dolinka and Sava Bohinjka, and 946 kilometers downstream it flows into the Danube in Serbia. From the springs to the mouth it is flowing through four states: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The Sava River connects three capital cities: Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade, but there is no traffic connectivity, as the river is not navigable throughout its whole course. The missing or little traffic allows nature to thrive.
Due to its size, landscape diversity, ecological values and the number of people whose survival is directly dependent on its waters, the Sava River is one of the most important tributaries of the Danube. The ecological significance of the Sava River and its floodplains is reflected in the fact that about one third of its total flood area (322,875 ha) and two thirds of its watercourses have already been designated as protected areas - from national parks, Ramsar sites, other strictly protected areas and Emerald network candidates to Natura 2000 sites. Sava is an extraordinary river of pan-European importance.
The Sava TIES Project will mark this important day by organizing local events with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of preserving the Sava River; its significance for inhabitants and the ecosystem; and about recent and lesser known threats such as invasive alien species.
