RADAR - Croatian partner's research: ITS systems can positively affect calming of traffic flow

01-12-2020

RADAR project's partner the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (FPZ) conducted research for pilot action on the effectiveness of the ITS system for automatic vehicle speed display and traffic lights control.

Given that vehicle speed has a significant impact on pedestrian safety, FPZ conducted research on six isolated pedestrian crossings at six different locations in Croatia whereby the locations were categorized into four types:

  • Pedestrian crossing with horizontal and vertical signalization
  • Pedestrian crossing with horizontal and vertical signalization with implemented speed display
  • Signalized pedestrian crossing with a pedestrian announcement system (push button)
  • Locations with implemented ITS system for automatic vehicle speed display and traffic lights control based on operational vehicle speed monitoring

The research included the measurement of traffic flow speed at the chosen locations. Based on the results of collected speed at the locations during the characteristic days of the week, a comparative analysis was performed.

In accordance with analysis results, it was found that the use of ITS system for automatic vehicle speed display and traffic lights control based on the operational vehicle speed monitoring can affect the calming of the traffic flow. Also, the research shows that said solution contributes to the harmonization of traffic flow, which also has a positive impact on the increase of traffic safety.

The pilot action and research will continue to develop further next year.
