NEW PURPOSE OF A FORMER MILITARY AREA – BROD FORTRESS

Brod Fortress is a former military area which dates from the 18th century, protected as tangible
cultural property of national importance, although the original condition of this heritage is
increasingly endangered. It is categorized as a brownfield location where only 15% of the total area
(30 ha of land and buildings in total) is reconstructed and in use.

The fortress area is 5 min walk from the main square and it occupies the highest part of the wider
downtown area, so it's preferred to be integrated into the citizens every day live and planned as a
new and different urban center which welcomes young, old, pupils, students, athletes,
recreationists, entrepreneurs, employees, tourists, visitors, etc. for fun, socializing, sports,
recreation, gastronomy, entrepreneurship, culture, learning, education, etc.

The objective is to hear the voice of citizens, their needs, wishes and ideas as much as possible, that
is - to form the future of the fortress in cooperation with them as the end users, changing the
current practice and applying innovative methods in urban development.

Motto: The Fortress is Yours!

BIG POTENTIAL - BIG CHALLENGES

  • The large area represents a regeneration challenge in two ways:
First, Slavonski Brod need to find a new funtion content that can be placed in the Fortress and that  be sufficiently complementary to each other.
Second, regeneration is necessarily a gradual and long-term process because it is not financially possible to rebuild the entire Fortress at once (nor does this represent sustainable urban regeneration in Slavonki's Brod view).
  • Raising residents' awareness: the Fortress does not represent a space that has lost its meaning in urban everyday life, but it can take on a multitude of new contents and meanings. Thus, the challenge is to re-integrate the Fortress into the everyday life of citizens.
  • Cooperation of relevant stakeholders (public, private and civil) who have different goals and visions of the urban regeneration of the Fortress. It is necessary to create common goals and operationalize them with the primary purpose of improving the quality of life of the citizens of Slavonski Brod.
  • In conclusion, the general challenge presented by the regeneration of the Fortress is the long duration of the reconstruction process for various reasons (financial and social), which will show the most important results only in the long-term development.
