MELIA Observatory Media Literacy Observatory for Active Citizenship and Sustainable Democracy
MATERIALS for educators
The world in the online environment brings us not only positives, but also many negatives, which are constantly increasing with the rapid development of technology and it is not easy to react to them immediately and know their pitfalls. In fact, the virtual world is an environment that lends itself to opportunities to simplify and distort information, to manipulate and influence the opinions of all age groups. Young people, who spend most of their time online, see this world as one of the main sources of information that significantly shapes their worldview.
Moreover, there is a tendency in society today to simplify information, and people generally tend to gravitate towards stereotypes and shortcuts that can reinforce their beliefs and worldview. This learning programme focuses on a world that the youth generation is very familiar with.
We will explain the most basic concepts and definitions in media literacy education and through concrete examples and activities that are linked to real problems in the field we will demonstrate how to approach the topic with an open mind and in a way that does not pose a danger to pupils and students in practice.
We will equip you with information and recommendations on how to make the topic accessible to pupils and students, understand it and teach them to critically assess and classify media content so that they can make the most of the media world. We will also focus on why active citizenship is important and how you can motivate young people to get involved and directly influence the world around us.
