InnoHPC - 3rd REGIONAL INNOHPC WORKSHOP - Report from Ljubljana

21-06-2018

3rd Regional Workshop took place on 31st May 2018 in Ljubljana, Chamber of Commerce Slovenia.

One of the main goals of this workshop was to present some good practices for usage of HPC in developing products with higher value inside Danube region in relation to electronic and automotive sectors, and to demonstrate best practices as result of cooperation among SMEs, simulation and domain experts and HPC centres.

Tomas Karasek, Head of parallel algorithms research lab at IT4Innovations national supercomputing center, Ostrava, Czech Republic explained success stories of application of HPC technologies for solving real world problems.  Examples, how HPC technologies could help increase innovation potential of Small and Medium Enterprises through Virtual Testing and Prototyping were presented, such as: improving the design for railway seats (the specimen made according to model successfully passed the UK safety railway standard), 3D printing of cranial helmets for children with deformities in shape of heads caused by long term stable/unchanged position during pregnancy period, improvement in design and unification of assortiment of lifts for cars and other vehicles.

Ivan Spisso, PhD,  HPC consultant for academic and industrial CFD applications SuperComputing Applications and Innovation (SCAI) Department in Bologna, Italy was talking about Engineering Applications and HPC a marriage of convenience. CINECA digital Innovation hub, constitutes of 70 universities, 8 institutes, 100 experts in HPC, together 800 , was presented and also the following  success stories were presented:
- Optimization of the airbox of the Lamborghini V12 engine through Radial Basis Functions applications
- Combining Artificial Intelligence to classical external aerodynamics optimization DoEs to reduce costs and time-to-result
- Implementing an HPC-enabled workflow for ELAPHE in-wheel electric motors design
- Creating innovative Data Analytics services from on-board diagnostics retrieval and analysis
- Reducing defects in high pressure die casting car components made in light weight alloys through multi physics HPC simulations

Radovan Sernec, PhD, Director of Innovation and Technology, AV Living Lab was talking about the support of HPC in designing autonomous vehicles: Will HPC be installed in our cars in near future? Several aspects of autonomous driving were presented, through data analysis, artificial intelligence methods during creation of decision algorithms, also problems of in time transfer of huge amount of data were presented among others. It seems that autonomous driving is already our near future. Option of installing HPC in every individual autonomous driving car seems to be reality in few years.

After very interesting presentations prof. dr. Janez Povh from Machine Faculty Ljubljana moderated discussion, and encouraged the participants to discuss how to approach the potential SMEs to decide to use the HPC services to improve their products, processes  in order to create products and services with higher value added. Turn key project seems to be very good option, so to create the community of end customer, experts with simulation knowledge and HPC.

Mr. Zmago Jereb from Kolektor group discussed the problems related to moulding; they are very much dependent on turn key solutions from Germany.

Dr. Žiga Povalej from Elaphe confirmed good experience in cooperating with HPC, they succeed in Indonetian and China market, offering boutique solution in the field of in-wheel electrical motors used for special vehicles.
